The reason? Two Words: Buzz Hargrove.
Everyone knows the NDP are the biggest threat to a possible Liberal government, the Conservatives know the NDP have to do well for them to have any chance to form any kind of government. Ergo bad news for the NDP is good news for the Liberals.

Yeah. I'm not so sure anyone cares what Buzz Hargrove thinks (in fact I'm rather sure most people vehemently DON'T care) but you're right about one thing. The message it sends to voters that people, ANY people, are abandoning the NDP for the Liberals because the big scary conservatives must be stopped is a bad one. Even if people don't particularly care for the first person to jump ship.
