If this coalition does go forward I think the Liberal party needs to think ahead and seriously consider filling all the vacancies in the Senate while we are in power. I don't care if we fill it 75% Liberal 25% NDP or whatever, as long as we fill it with non Conservatives.
Barring that in a little over a year Harper would be able to stack the Senate with Conservatives and take a majority there which, coupled with a Majority election victory in the House, would leave him with absolute power. And I don't think there's anything that scares a sane (read: center/left leaning) Canadian more than the thought of Emperor Stephen Harper.

How about Elizabeth May for the Senate? About time we had a Green there.
How about appointing Senators who actually represent their provincial constituencies instead of partisan hacks loyal to the government-of-the-day?
Now there's a progressive idea.
I hope that this doesn't happen. Senate reform is one of the few things that I agree with the CPC and proposing senate reforms would be one way for the Liberal party to finally make in roads into the western, populist base.
I don't think a Conservative majority is to be feared. I think the last election showed that. Even with the Liberals collapsing to historic lows, a majority was well out of reach for Harper. Senate stacking to avoid such a possibility would only hurt the coalition.
However, the coalition should appoint one senator and draft her for the coalition's cabinet - Elizabeth May.
Sure, and while we're at it lets gather up some pixie dust and spread it around the Senate floor.
This is the real world guys, and I do fear a Conservative majority, unlikely as it may be. Better to prepare for the worst in my opinion.
And as for Elizabeth May, she had a chance this last election to actually win a seat in Parliament, but instead of running in a likely Green seat where she probably would have won she chose to go up against a Conservative Cabinet Minister and in so doing screwed her entire party. Do you really want someone that stupid in the Senate?
